Dark Light along the Leeds Liverpool Canal

Dark Light

It’s been an awful day today! It’s been wet and windy and cold and generally the usual miserable British winter weather. We eventually decided to brave a walk along the Leeds Liverpool canal to give the dog (and us) some much needed fresh air.

The rain stayed away, but it was still blustery and cold. We pulled up our hoods against the wind and put our best feet forward. The light, for the most part was flat and dull behind the blanket of cloud, but just every now and then it would find a chink and remind us that it was still daylight! Looking up the canal towards the light was beautiful, but beyond the camera to capture completely, so I went for the silhouette!

The Fastest Tram in the North West?

The Fastest Tram in the North West?

I was standing in the middle of Southport Pier, catching the last gasps of sunlight as the sun dipped below the horizon. I was using my wide angle lens. I saw the tram, honest, but it was oh so far away through my viewfinder! When the driver started tooting I thought it best to move to one side. I quickly placed the tripod and clicked the shutter. The tram flew past in a blur leaving me with this…

Is it the fastest tram in the North West, or was I just a little bit slower than usual?

Winter Light over the Beach

Winter Light – there’s a softness to the light during winter, even in the middle of the day. There was a lot of cloud cover on this afternoon, but thankfully most of it was behind me, with just enough light to bring out some detail in the foreground…

Tide Right in Southport Coast

Tide Right In

It’s a rare sight to see the tide right in along the Southport and Ainsdale coast (well, twice a day, I suppose, but it goes in and out so fast…). When the tide is right up close to the dunes there is a wonderful simplicity to the view. The sea splits the sky from the marram grass with a sliver of smoothness and light.

This landscape shot was captured during one of those rare moments when the light breaks through the clouds illuminating just the sea.

I’ve added this photo to my shop page on Photobox.

Southport Marine Lake Dusk

Marine Dusk

Southport Marine Lake is generally a fairly flat, uninviting expanse of water, but just as the sun dips behind the Marine Way Bridge and the lights come on in the Ramada Hotel and the Funfair the water comes to life with reflections. If you time it right, the sky will have just enough light to balance the electric lights and the reflections on the water. This shot was taken at dusk, just in that magic moment when the light was perfectly balanced.

Less is More

Less in More

Very often less is definitely more! When attempting to capture the essence of the Sefton coast I’ve tried to reduce the elements in the image to those most evocative of the scene. For me it is the marram grass edging the beach, with the sea and sky as a backdrop that is most distinctly our coast. In looking for the kind of image that I could hang on my wall I think that detail distracts, busyness makes for a restless image. In this case a simple image is more restful on the eye, and, I think, something that will endure as a pleasing image much longer than a typical beach scene full of activity and detail.

Blackpool Beachfront

Blackpool Beachfront

Just an early autumn snap of daytrippers at the beachfront in Blackpool. The long lines of the railings were gleaming in the afternoon light and the day was more than warm enough for folks to congregate on the beach.

Vastness – Ainsdale Beach

It’s been a while since I’ve managed to shoot Ainsdale Beach, but I managed to get there for a few minutes last week. The holidaymakers are beginning to thin out, and the weather is beginning to cool, so it’s just right for capturing the vastness of the beach.Vastness

Brighton Beach

Pebble BeachWe took a trip to the other end of the country for a few days. As it was a holiday I didn’t really have time to do much photography, but I did take my camera with me on the beach. This shot was taken hand held from the beach looking towards Brighton’s burnt pier. This pier has been the subject of many photographs, so I wanted to try and do something a little different. The shot was taken hand held, but slow enough to show movement in the waves.

Blowing in the Wind

Blowing in the Wind

I haven’t been down to the beach for ages, and certainly haven’t had time to take my tripod with me, but at long last I’ve got a long exposure shot of marram, sea and sky all in motion together…
